Why you need to STOP microwaving plastic
Plastic is everywhere. It's sneaking into our food, our water, and even the air we breathe. New research shows these tiny microplastics can harm our health, leading to cancer, infertility, and hormone disruptions. Want to cut down on your plastic intake? We'll walk you through ways to reduce your exposure - and that includes the microwave!

Everyone knows this. Too bad nobody cares. In all of Asia, plastic takeout containers are the dominant vehicle for takeout and delivery. Imagine boiling hot soup being poured straight into a plastic bag. Each and every meal is like this. Hopefully education improves.

Cooking + plastic = a big no-no! With that principle in mind, I don’t use non-stick pots and pans, or even plastic coffee machines(!), for the same reasons why microwaving plastic containers is not great

Seems like part of the issue might be the choke hold oil and petrochemical companies have on our politicians, the reason we are not slowing down on plastic production is because the oil companies don't want us too! So cool, they are polluting the air and environment with petrol fumes and now effecting our bodies with plastic byproduct waste.

Plastic is used everywhere because it is cheap. Else products would be beyond the reach of the poorest consumers. And the rest of us in society is too lazy to transfer food to metal or glass containers at home. It's one of those "live 10 years shorter but enjoy the time we have more" kind of things.

So what to use to meal prep and freeze the food? Sometimes I prepare 12-16 containers of food and store it in the freezer. Container manufacturer claims that they are both freeze and microwave safe, so I do defrost and heat these meals in the microwave. Is there any other way to safely do the same?

In what world are plastics indestructible? They get scratched easily, shedding those microshavings. Drop a polystyrene box with inbuilt planned obsolescence. Containers have to have at least one part an elastomer to form a seal. If you store some crystals like suger in there, it gets stuck in the threads and the plastic gets abraded into dust. Plastics ned to be collected and burned instead of waiting for them to break up into this hazardous dust. That landfill on the illustration might as well be a pool of petroleum. I don't heat plastic in a microwave oven at all. Heat and plastics don't mix.

  • @Drahko12

How to avoid micro plastics? Do nothing lol is too late already and corporations don’t care in continuing using plastic. You can’t just put this on normal people like it happened with the failed recycle programs. This has to come from the very top which is the production lines and regulate the use and fabrication of plastics

You know what else causes cancer?? Telling everyone that everything they do to function in the society they live in... wait for it... causes cancer! Brain cancer if you ask me. As if we don't have enough stupid shit to try to avoid. It doesn't matter does it? Because what can you really do about it?? Go live in an underwater cave? Mars? Climb a tree and never come down? Instead of adding to the never ending bullshit parade, how about the money spent on studies to link rubicks cubes to colon cancer be redirected to finding a solution for CANCER. It's so obviously not the goal of any research institue. What would they do if they found a cure? Get jobs doing real work? Have you seen the new ad campaign? Here in Ohio there are billboards asking in huge letters. Are you Pre-Diabetic? What? I must be if I'm not already a diabetic right? What do I do? OMG!! I'm gonna DIE!! I better start paying attention to another bogeyman. Maybe I'll ask my doctor if insulin is right for me. Like the TV ad suggests in every pharma ad I have ever seen or heard. It's sickening.

But if the argument is to stop microwaving plastic containers because after 3min the covalent bonds begin to break... don't we wash our dishes with a plastic sponge or alternatively with a dish washer that uses plastic tubing in most modern areas of the world? If so wouldn't our non-plastic dishes and plastic dishes have similar levels of microplastics to begin with and thus already 'muddies the water' with what's recommended vs reality?

  • @sei_asagiri

Microplastics are filtered at water treatment plants, which means there are none in the water that we drink. Microwave safe plastic and bpa free plastic do not leech chemicals into the water or food. There is so little reasearch done on Microplastics because its pretty much recognized by the scientific community that Microplastics have basically zero negative effect on the environment. This video is nothing but another fear mongering news piece.

At age 30, Ann suffered a brainstem stroke that left her unable to speak or move. Yet with the help of artificial intelligence, UCSF and UC Berkeley researchers developed a breakthrough brain implant and digital avatar that gave Ann her voice back in a clinical trial. This new form of communication made Ann realize she could support others, and now hopes to become a counselor in a physical rehabilitation center.
